SEGUIN, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl basketball team started the season on Friday night at Texas Lutheran with a 67-58 win over the Bulldogs thanks in part to a career-high scoring night from senior guard
Aiken Semones.
Semones shot 9-16 from the floor and hit seven 3-pointers for a career-high 25 points to lead the Cowgirls in the season opener. She hit three 3-point shots in the first quarter to help the Cowgirls get out to a 17-16 lead.
The Cowgirls outscored TLU 14-8 in the second to lead at the half 31-24. Hardin-Simmons had its best shooting quarter of the day to start the third, shooting 47% with nine makes to lead 53-38 heading to the fourth quarter.
Texas Lutheran kept it close but never regained the lead, and the Cowgirls won by a final score of 67-58 to open the season on the road.
Freshman guard
Jacqueline Berry scored 12 points in her debut for the Cowgirls out of Texhoma. She shared the team lead in rebounds with six along with
Kynnan Shields and
Kylie Ellsworth. Berry also led the Cowgirls with four assists at TLU.
The Cowgirls start the season 1-0 with the win and will play at Schreiner on Saturday 4 p.m. in Kerrville. Hardin-Simmons will open at home on Nov. 15 at 5:30 p.m. against the University of St. Thomas.
