KERRVILLE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl basketball team won thanks to a strong finish on Saturday night by a final score of 78-72 over the Schreiner Mountaineers to end opening weekend 2-0.
The game was tied at 5-5 early before the Cowgirls pushed out to a 17-12 lead after the first quarter, ending with a 3-pointer from
Madison Williams. She led the team with a career-high 26 points.
Williams hit another 3-pointer just before halftime to get the Cowgirls up 41-29. Hardin-Simmons was up 17 at one point in the third quarter before the Mountaineers stormed back to cut the HSU lead to 55-52 after three quarters.
Freshman
Jacqueline Berry scored nine of the last 11 Cowgirl points to secure the win. Berry finished with 24 points and had the team high in rebounding with nine rebounds, tied with
Kynnan Shields.
Aiken Semones followed up opening night with 14 points against Schreiner, sinking four 3-pointers for the Cowgirls.
Hardin-Simmons improves to 2-0 to start the year off and will open at home against the University of St. Thomas on Friday at 5:30 p.m. in the Mabee Athletic Complex.
