ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl softball team swept the University of the Ozarks Eagles in a doubleheader 5-0 and 11-8 in American Southwest Conference play on Friday night at Lou Morton Ellis Field.
Haven Williams was dealing with a four-hit shutout in seven innings with three strikeouts for the Cowgirls in game one.
Williams got the win with the help of some solo-shot home runs early.
Emily Jacobs hit her fifth homer of the year in the first inning and
Madison Mayhew got her first home run in the second to make it 2-0.
Jazlynn Cantu and
Haley Henson had RBIs to get out to a 4-0 lead and
Ashley Easley drove in a run to make it a 5-0 Cowgirl win.
Mayhew led with two hits with the home run and a double in game one.
Game two was a slugfest with 24 hits combined and 19 runs scored in the 11-8 Cowgirl win.
Ozarks opened with two runs in the first and the Cowgirl answered with seven runs in the first thanks to five walks in the inning to go up 7-2.
Jacobs,
Lindsey Ratcliffe, Easley,
Kristen McMillan, Henson, and
Madi Hubbard each had an RBI, Henson with two, in the Cowgirl first inning.
A big triple from Ozarks scored two runs in the second to make it 7-4. Jacobs got another RBI in the third inning, followed by Ratcliffe driving in a run and Salinas hitting one off the pitcher to score another, making it 10-4.
Ozarks scored in the fifth and were answered by another Salinas RBI to make it 11-5. The Eagles plated three runs in the final inning, falling 11-8 to HSU.
Henson, Hubbard, and Salinas each had two hits in game two while Henson, Jacobs, Ratcliffe, and Salinas all had two RBIs. The Cowgirls also stole seven bases in game two, Ratcliffe with two.
Kylie Ruiz got the win in the start and went 3.1 innings with a strikeout.
Jorey Hood pitched 2.2 innings with just three hits and
Aubrianna Salazar threw the final inning with a strikeout for the Cowgirls.
Hardin-Simmons improves to 11-1 on the season and will face the Eagles in the third game of the series on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Ellis Field in Abilene.
