ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowboy tennis team opened ASC play with an 8-1 win over the McMurry War Hawks on Friday at the Streich Tennis Center.
The Cowboys won two of three doubles matches against McMurry and went home with all six singles victories over the War Hawks.
Luke Cantu and Justis Petersilie started in the first doubles match with a win in tiebreakers 8-7(4) against Villalovos and Soe.
Zach Fowler and
Payne Smith won the second doubles match in an 8-4 defeat of Bagwell and Frosch.
Petersilie had the ace singles match for the Cowboys and went for a win 6-3, 6-2 against Villalovos.
Cantu was in the second singles flight for HSU and fought to come back and win 5-7, 6-1, 1-0(10-2) in a split set win.
Fowler handled Bagwell of McMurry in the third singles match for a Cowboy win 6-2, 6-2.
Smith won 6-4, 6-1 playing against Frosch in the fourth singles match and
Brandon Curiel also won his match 6-4, 6-1 in the fifth singles.
Jordan Oberbillig defeated the six singles opponent Gregory 6-0, 6-1 to finish the Hardin-Simmons 8-1 win.
The Cowboys improve to 6-7 on the year and start 1-0 in ASC play. The next HSU tennis match will be at Southwestern in Georgetown on April 5.
