ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team took its three-game series with the University of St. Thomas by sweeping a Saturday doubleheader, 9-1 and 10-3 at Rice's Reckling Park.
The Cowboys have now won five straight games to improve to 6-9 on the year.
Game 1
Senior lefthander
Brandon Girod put together another solid start for the Cowboys. He went six innings, allowing only three hits and struck out nine batters, while allowing only one run. He improved to 1-1 on the year. George Guy worked a scoreless seventh inning.
Freshman third baseman
Jacob Hollingsworth gave the Cowgirls a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI single and
Gannon Azios had a bases loaded walk to bring home a second run. It was all Girod would need.
St. Thomas scored its lone run on an Israel Fields RBI single in the second.
Senior first baseman
Sam Buchkowski had a two-run single to left in the fifth inning.
Jett Forrest had a two-run double in the sixth inning, Buchkowski added an RBI single,
Karson Leatherwood had a sacrifice fly and
Nick Ellington had an RBI single.
Hollingsworth led the Cowboys with three hits and Buchkowski drove in three runs.
Kadin Munson took the loss for UST allowing three runs over five innings. Kyle Bearden had two of the three Celt hits.
Game 2
The Cowboys came out in the top of the first inning of game two and scored six times. Freshman catcher
Gavin Boedeker gave his big brother and battery mate a lift in the first inning with a two-run single.
Sam Buchkowski had an RBI groundout,
Nick Ellington reached on a fielder's choice.
Luke Kirkbride had a two-run single in the first as well.
UST scored twice in the second inning on an A.J. Gonzales home run and a Travis Gully RBI single.
Leatherwood and Hollingsworth had RBI singles in the third inning to push the lead to 8-2.
Kyler Reed added an RBI single in the seventh and Buchkowski had a bases-loaded walk to bring home another run.
Reed had three hits for the Cowboys to lead the way. Jackson Rodgers had two hits for UST.
Tristan Boedeker (1-0) earned the win on the mound working seven innings and scattering eight hits while allowing just two earned runs. He struck out six batters.
Brandon Bane worked the final two innings for the Cowboys.
Luke Sebesta allowed eight runs (three earned) on eight hits and fell to 0-1 on the year.
UST fell to 5-12 on the year. HSU will play at the University of Dallas on Tuesday at 2p.m. in Irving.
