ABILENE, Texas – Fifth-ranked East Texas Baptist pushed its winning streak to 11 games with an American Southwest Conference baseball doubleheader sweep of Hardin-Simmons on Saturday afternoon at Hunter Field, winning 14-3 and 14-5.
Game 1
The Cowboys scored a run in the first inning off All-American Sayers Collins. He came into the game with a 1.07 ERA. The Tigers came back in the third inning with six runs, highlighted by a Brett Wagner grand slam.
The game remained 6-1 until the sixth inning when the Tigers scored five runs off
Tristan Boedeker who had relived starter
Grant Mitzelfelt. They added three more runs in the seventh inning.
HSU scored a pair of runs in the seventh inning off reliever Ben Burroughs. Gavin Boedecker and
Craig Symmes had RBI singles for the Cowboys in the inning.
Collins went six innings and struck out a season-high 11 while allowing just one run on six hits. He improved to 8-1. Mitzelfelt allowed six runs in five innings while striking out five to fall to 2-5.
Jacob Hollingsworth and
Jett Forrest had two hits each for the Cowboys. Dylan Burnaman had three hits and drove in six for the Tigers.
Game 2
The Tigers exploded for 25 hits in the second game and jumped to a 10-1 lead after three innings. HSU's run came in the second inning on a
Gannon Azios RBI single.
HSU added four runs in the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 11-5. Azios had an RBI double and
Nick Ellington had a two-run single and the fourth run scored on an error.
Caidon Livingston (1-1) allowed six runs on eight hits in one and one-third innings.
Brandon Girod worked two-thirds of an innings. Freshman
Guy George worked five and two-third innings and allowed just three runs for the Cowboys and
Jaydon Stephens worked the final inning and a third.
Jacob Sherman earned the win for ETBU with three innings of scoreless relief of starter Landry Powell.
Azios,
Sam Buchkowski and Hollingsworth had two hits each for the Cowboys. Burnaman and Nicolas Chavez had four hits each for the Tigers.
The Cowboys fell to 11-20 overall and to 6-12 in conference play. ETBU improved to 27-6 overall and to 17-1 in ASC play. HSU will host nationally ranked Trinity on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
