ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team fell to No. 15 Trinity, 7-2, on Tuesday night at John J. Hunter Field.
Before the game, HSU had a ceremony recognizing the 40th anniversary of the dedication of Hunter Field. Many of the Hunter family were in attendance for the celebration.
The Cowboys came up with an unearned run in the first inning as
Luke Kirkbride scored. Trinity took the lead on a two-run single by Kaleb Woodward.
HSU tied the game in the fourth inning on a solo home run by
Kyler Reed, his first of the season.
Trinity scored four times in the fifth the first on a wild pitch and three more on a Cristian Holloway home run. Alex Monson added a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning.
Jace Martinez had a solid three innings for the Cowboys as the freshman allowed just one earned run on four hits.
Brandon Bane allowed four runs in two innings to take the loss.
Alex Carte worked a scoreless inning with a pair of strikeouts,
Caleb Smith allowed one run in his inning of work,
Grayson Bearden struck out a pair of batters in his scoreless inning of work and
Johnny Follett worked a scoreless ninth.
Zack Balbin started and went four innings for Trinity allowing two runs. Matthew Mackey worked four and two-third innings of scoreless relief for the win. Jonathan Newman worked the final out.
Sam Buchkowksi and
Tristin Laughlin each had two hits for the Cowboys. Nicholas Lazzara led Trinity with three hits.
Trinity improved to 25-8 on the year and the Cowboys fell to 11-21. HSU will head to Longview for an American Southwest Conference series against LeTourneau, beginning with a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Friday.
