MARSHALL, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team fell 6-4 to UT Dallas in the second round of the American Southwest Conference Baseball Tournament on Friday afternoon in Marshall, Texas.
Zach Landry put the Comets on the board with a two-run home run to the short porch in left field. The Comets added three runs in the third inning on a two-base throwing error on a sacrifice bunt that allowed two runs to score and Dylan Bivins added an RBI single.
HSU got back in the game with a four-run fifth inning.
Karson Leatherwood scored on a wild pitch,
Baylan Vaughan had an RBI double to left center and
Jacob Hollingsworth added a two-run single to cut the deficit to 5-4.
The Comets scored another run in the sixth inning on a wild pitch.
Wyatt Tumlinson started for the Cowboys and went five and two-third innings. He allowed six runs (four earned) to fall to 3-9.
Guy George pitched to two batters and
Brandon Bane came on and worked two and one-third innings of scoreless relief.
Ryan Vera went seven innings allowing four runs on six hits and earned the win to improve to 6-3. Brandon Price worked the final two innings with four saves.
Gannon Azios had two of the eight Cowboy hits. Albert Garza and Lucas Rexin had two hits each in a seven-hit Comet attack.
HSU is now 15-25 and UTD improved to 29-12 on the year. The Cowboys will play in an elimination game against the East Texas Baptist-Concordia loser at 5 p.m.
