RICHARDSON, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl softball team split a doubleheader in American Southwest Conference play on Friday night with UT-Dallas in the final weekend of the regular season.
The Cowgirls struggled at the plate in game one and fell 3-0 to the Comets. Hardin-Simmons put together just three hits and got called out at first after legging out a good bunt, stranding a runner on third in the inning.
Emily Jacobs had two doubles for the Cowgirls in game one.
Haven Williams started and had the loss with no run support. Williams had a strikeout in four and a third innings and kept the Cowgirls in it.
Kylie Ruiz came in to pitch and slammed the door on a few UTD runners left in scoring position with a strikeout to end the inning and finished with three Ks against five Comet batters in an inning and two-thirds for HSU.
The Cowgirls got the kinks out of the bats in game two with an 8-7 win at UT-Dallas. The Comets led 1-0 after one inning but HSU tied the game with a steal of home from Jacobs to make it 1-1.
The Cowgirls loaded the bases and
Ella Salinas went yard for a grand slam in the third inning to make it 5-1 Cowgirls. Salinas now has three home runs on the season.
Ashley Easley singled up the middle to get an RBI and make it 6-1 HSU to end the third inning.
Hardin-Simmons scored two more in the fourth inning with a double to the wall from
Madi Hubbard for two RBIs to lead 8-1.
The Comets came back and scored six runs including four off home runs to make it tight.
The Cowgirls held it down and
Aubrianna Salazar left with the save in the final two innings with a strikeout in the 8-7 win.
Ruiz started and threw four and a third innings with a strikeout in the win and
Jorey Hood also pitched for Hardin-Simmons.
Salinas led with four RBIs on the grand slam and had two hits. Easley also had two hits as well as
Ava Dennis in the designated player spot. Hubbard had two RBIs on the double and Easley had one RBI and two stolen bases for the Cowgirls in the win.
The Cowgirls move to a record of 25-11 and 14-9 in ASC play with the final game of the regular season tomorrow at noon at UT-Dallas.
