ROME, Ga. – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl volleyball team defeated the No. 12 ranked Berry College Vikings 3-2 on Friday night and dropped the first game to Washington and Lee 3-1 to split the first day of the Berry Invitational.
The Cowgirls went down to the Washington and Lee Generals in four sets 25-22, 25-23, 15-25, 26-24 to start the evening playing at Berry.
Juniors
Gabby Jones and
Liz Underwood led the Cowgirls with 12 kills each in game one. Jones added five blocks as well.
Ali Meyer led the team in assists with 18 and
Keatyn Rodgers had double-figures with 16 assists.
Underwood had 17 digs to lead the Cowgirls in the match.
Kat Martinez notched ten digs for the Hardin-Simmons back line.
The Cowgirls turned around and played No. 12 Berry College on their home floor late into the night for a five-set win 25-23, 20-25, 25-21, 12-25, 15-13.
Jones and Underwood again led the Cowgirls against Berry with 11 kills apiece. Senior
Abbi Allen had nine kills and three blocks on the right side for HSU in game two.
Meyer assisted 21 times in game two and Rodgers had ten assists. Martinez led the digs with 23 picked up while Underwood had 13 digs.
The Cowgirls are 1-1 to start the year after a big win over a ranked Berry College and will play the last game of the Berry Invitational on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. against Sewanee University of the South.
