ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team rallied from a 13-point deficit and had two shots in the final five seconds to tie the game but fell, 75-72, to UT Dallas on Thursday night at the Mabee Complex.
The game does not count in the ASC standings as the Comets are reclassifying to Division II. HSU is now 16-3 on the year and UTD improved to 13-6.
HSU jumped out to a 15-8 lead with 2:19 to play in the first quarter but the Comets scored the last eight points of the quarter to take a 16-15 lead.
The game was tied at 24-24 midway through the second quarter and the Comets again had a quick 8-0 run to push the lead out to 32-24. HSU trailed 34-30 at halftime. It was another Comet 9-0 run in the third quarter that pushed the lead out to 43-32. UTD led 62-49 after three quarters.
The Cowgirls chipped away at the deficit and had the ball with :07 to play and
Aiken Semones had a pair of 3-pointers rim out.
Jaqueline Berry led the Cowgirls with 18 points,
Kynnan Shields added 17 points and
Madison Williams scored 14 points and dished out six assists.
Anna Yellen led UTD with 16 points, Alex Bowman added 15. Addy Self had 12 points, 14 rebounds, six assists, five steals and four blocks.
HSU will host Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a key American Southwest Conference game.
