MARSHALL, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's soccer team overcame a first-half deficit to defeat East Texas Baptist 3-2 on Friday night at Cornish Field in American Southwest Conference play.
James Webb put the Cowboys ahead early, converting a penalty kick in the 14
th minute to give Hardin-Simmons a 1-0 lead.
East Texas Baptist answered with two goals before halftime, one by Jacob Wenzel in the 34
th minute and another from Aiden Fortenberry in the 42
nd minute, sending the Tigers to the break leading 2-1.
Hardin-Simmons found its rhythm in the second half. Goalkeeper
Carson Null equalized in the 70
th minute on a long strike from a deep free kick that found its way into the goal, and
Daniel Villagomez netted the game-winner in the 76
th minute off an assist from
Gabriel Sias.
The Cowboys outshot the Tigers 14-7 and earned 12 corner kicks compared to two for ETBU. Null also made two saves in goal, while ETBU keeper Joshua Weston recorded nine saves.
Hardin-Simmons finished Friday 4-8-1 are now 1-2-1 in the ASC after the win over ETBU. The Cowboys will travel to Howard Payne to play in Brownwood on Oct. 25 at 7:30 p.m.
