BROWNWOOD, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowboy soccer earned a 3-1 road victory over Howard Payne on Saturday evening in Brownwood in American Southwest Conference play. The Cowboys improve to 5-8-1 overall and 2-2-1 in ASC competition with the win.
Howard Payne opened the scoring in the 21
st minute on a strike from defender Dylan Massingill, assisted by forward Kolby Lara, to grab an early 1-0 advantage. The Cowboys responded quickly, leveling the match when
Daniel Villagomez found the back of the net in the 24
th minute off an assist from
Benny Lube.
Hardin-Simmons gained its first lead shortly after halftime as forward
James Webb scored in the 50
th minute, assisted by
Korbin Raef, to make the score 2-1. Villagomez sealed the result in the 82
nd minute with his second goal of the contest, finishing a pass from
Edwin Macias to cap the Cowboy offensive performance.
The Cowboys outshot the Yellow Jackets 18-6 and applied constant pressure with 12 corner kicks compared to zero from Howard Payne. Goalkeeper
Carson Null earned the win while playing the full 90 minutes in net.
The Cowboys continue ASC action next week as they return home to Abilene. Kickoff starts at 7:30 p.m. on November 1 against Mary Hardin-Baylor for Cowboy senior day at the HSU Soccer Complex.
