ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl basketball team dropped a battle of a game to the Concordia Moorhead Cobbers on Monday afternoon at the Mabee Athletic Complex 67-65.
Concordia started fast and the Cowgirls found themselves in a hole down 18-4 early. HSU fought back to take the lead with a bucket from
MaeSyn Gay to lead 27-26 in the second quarter.
Hardin-Simmons extended the lead with 3-pointers from
Dylan Koele and
Avery Cathey before Taya Jeffrey sunk a 3-pointer for the Cobbers at the halftime buzzer to cut the Cowgirl lead to 33-31.
The Cowgirls had their largest lead with another 3-pointer from Cathey to lead 48-41 in the third quarter, but Concordia cut it to 48-47 heading into the final frame.
The Cobbers pushed past HSU to lead 60-53 in the fourth quarter, but the Cowgirls stormed back to tie the game 62-62 with a basket from
Jacqueline Berry. Berry finished with 22 points to lead the Cowgirls.
Concordia Moorehead benefited from a free throw with ten seconds remaining to push the lead. The Cobbers shot 15-of-20 from the strike and Hardin-Simmons was 8-of-12 on free throws, which all came from Berry. The Cowgirls were unable to convert on the final play of the game and went down 67-65.
Cathey and Gay scored 11 points and ten points, respectively, and Koele led with nine rebounds and scored eight points. Both Koele and Bennett finished the game with three blocks for the Cowgirls.
Hardin-Simmons is now 11-3 on the year and will travel to play at Schreiner on Saturday, January 3 with tip off at 4 p.m. in Kerrville, Texas.
