ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl softball team won 10-1 and 7-6 against the Austin College Kangaroos on Saturday at Ellis Field on opening day.
HSU got up 4-1 and then dropped six runs in the fourth to ice game one 10-1 in five innings.
Emily Jacobs had five RBIs on three hits with two doubles.
Haley Henson also had three hits with three runs scored.
Ella Salinas had two RBIs, and
Grace Thompson and
Abbey Tarr each drove in a run as well in game one.
Gabby Montanez pitched for the Cowgirl win in five innings with seven strikeouts.
The Cowgirls got up early again in game two leading 7-0 after five innings.
Lindey Ratcliffe clubbed two home runs and finished with four RBIs in the game. Salinas had two hits and two RBIs in game two for Hardin-Simmons.
Austin fought back to go down 7-6 after the Cowgirls held in the final inning. Hanah Aaron pitched for seven innings and had the win with four strikeouts for HSU.
Kelly Shackelford also pitched for the Cowgirls.
The Cowgirls start 2-0 and will travel to the University of Dallas on Feb. 7 for two games at 4 p.m. on Friday.
