ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl softball team split two games of a doubleheader with the Schreiner Mountaineers on Saturday at Ellis Field, winning the first 6-2 and dropping the second 7-6.
Schreiner got up 2-0 with a few unearned runs in the first two innings before the Cowgirls answered with an unearned run of their own followed by RBIs from
Ella Salinas and
Madi Hubbard in the third inning to lead 3-2.
The Cowgirls added another unearned run and played a steal for home to make it 5-2 and scored on another throwing error to make it a 6-2 game after the fourth inning.
The Cowgirls took the game with four hits and three errors. Schreiner fell with four hits and three errors in game one.
The Cowgirls stole ten bases in game one and
Grace Thompson stole four times in the game, including stealing home.
Gabby Montanez pitched a complete game with five strikeouts in seven innings in her third win.
Both teams got past the slow start in game one and had 11 hits each in game two.
Lindsey Ratcliffe doubled to score for the Cowgirls in the second, but Schreiner got the lead 4-1 in the third.
Salinas doubled home two RBIs to make it 4-3 in the third. Schreiner added runs to lead 7-3 in the fifth.
Ava Dennis hit a single for an RBI in the fifth to make it 7-4. Thompson drove in a run and came home to score in the sixth inning to make it 7-6. The Cowgirl rally fell short, and they lost 7-6 to Schreiner.
Haley Henson, Ratcliffe, and Thompson all had two hits for HSU in game two. Salinas led with two RBIs.
Hannah Aaron started and had the loss pitching for the Cowgirls with four innings and four strikeouts.
Kelly Shackelford threw three innings and had three strikeouts for the Cowgirls.
Hardin-Simmons falls to 5-1 and will play against McMurry on Tuesday afternoon at 5 p.m. on the south side of Abilene.
