MARSHALL, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team dropped an American Southwest Conference doubleheader at East Texas Baptist on Saturday, falling 18-8 in eight innings in the first game and 5-2 in the nightcap.
Game 1
HSU scored a pair of runs in the first inning on an RBI single by
Brock Calvillo.
Justin Blancaflor had an RBI groundout. ETBU scored a pair of runs in the first to tie the game on a Hunter Rumachik two-run double.
Quincy McGraw had a two-run home run in the second inning and
Jake Trapani had a three-run home run to give the Cowboys a 7-2 lead in the third inning.
ETBU scored three times in the fifth inning and took control of the game with an eight-run sixth inning.
Trapani,
Baylan Vaughan and Calvillo had two hits each. Bumpus led ETBU with three hits.
Jace Martinez took the loss in relief for HSU to fall to 0-3.
Jacob Posey started and went four and one-third innings.
Johnny Follett,
Guy George and
Coulter Maxson all worked in relief. Jackson Jones earned the win for ETBU with four innings of one-hit, one-run relief to improve to 2-1.
Game 2
Jake Trapani, who started the game on the mound and also hit, had a solo home run in the second inning to give the Cowboys an early lead.
Jimmy Mathis made it 2-0 for the Cowboys in the fourth inning with a solo home run.
ETBU came back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead. Ben Lea had a two-run home run and Dylan Burnaman added an RBI single. ETBU added a single run in the seventh and eighth inning and held the Cowboys off the board the rest of the way.
Karson Leatherwood led the Cowboys with two hits. Burnaman led the Tigers with two hits.
Trapani fell to 0-2 with the loss on the mound. He scattered seven hits over six and one-third innings allowing four runs.
Jack Kimsey worked the final inning and two-thirds. Tyler Bogusz went seven innings allowing two runs and six hits to improve to 3-0 on the year.
Hardin-Simmons is now 4-15 on the year and 1-3 in conference play. ETBU improved to 15-8 overall and 3-1 in league play. HSU will go to Mary Hardin-Baylor next weekend.
