ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team fell 8-5 to Trinity on Wednesday evening at Hunter Field.
Trinity opened the evening with a four-run first inning, Maddox McDonald had the big blow a two-run home run and Michael Lustina added a solo shot.
Jacob Hollingsworth had an RBI single in the third inning for the Cowboys. Trinity pushed the lead to 7-1, before HSU added another run on the back end of a caught stealing.
Baylan Vaughan had a two-run double for the Cowboys and
Justin Blancaflor added an RBI single in the seventh inning to cut the deficit to 8-5.
The Cowboys used five pitchers in the contest.
Alex Carte started and took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits in the first inning. He fell to 1-3 on the year.
Brady Bennett worked an inning,
Tanner Liming received his first collegiate action for an inning,
Bowdy Shane worked a scoreless fourth inning,
Javin Zoolkoski saw his first action of the year and allowed one run over two innings and
Johnny Follett came on and worked the final three innings allowing just one hit and no runs.
Pauk Nathanson started for Trinity and worked into the fourth inning, allowing two runs. Jack Briese worked four innings and earned the win to improve to 2-0. Brandon Morio worked a scoreless eighth and Wes Hellings worked the ninth for his third save of the season.
Blancaflor led the Cowboys with two hits and Vaughan added two hits, two doubles and two RBIs. Maddox McDonald and Nicholas Lazzara each had two hits for Trinity.
The Cowboys are 3-10 on the year and Trinity improved to 9-1. HSU will return to action March 11 at the University of Dallas in Irving.
