MIDLAND, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl softball team allowed only three hits in two wins against the University of the Southwest, winning 11-0 and 16-3 on Saturday playing at a neutral site hosted by Midland College.
Madi Hubbard had a hit in all three at bats in game one with three RBIs. She drove in two runs with a double in the second and had an RBI on a single in the fifth inning.
The Cowgirls poured it on in the fifth inning with RBIs from
Grace Thompson,
Emily Jacobs, and home runs from
Kristen McMillan for three RBIs and
Haley Henson for a solo homerun to make it 11-0.
McMillan, Henson, and
Ava Dennis all had two hits in game one for the Cowgirls. Hubbard and McMillan finished with three RBIs. Henson, Dennis,
Ella Salinas, Thompson, and Jacobs all had one RBI.
Gabby Montanez got her seventh win of the year with five innings and just one hit allowed with four strikeouts in game one for Hardin-Simmons.
The Cowgirls had more of the same energy in game two, winning 16-3 in five innings on 16 hits.
Akaysia Grogan got the start pitching and had ten strikeouts in five innings allowing just two hits in the win.
Thompson opened the scoring with a towering Cowgirl homerun out of left in the second inning for two RBIs.
Erin Love hit a double for two RBIs in the second inning to make it 4-0. Jacobs hit a three-run homerun to end the 7-0 second inning for Hardin-Simmons.
Abbey Tarr had a two-RBI single in the fourth inning before the Cowgirls finished the game 16-3 after five innings.
Jazlynn Cantu and
Caitlin Clem led the charge with three hits each with a double in game two. Love, Tarr, and Jacobs each led the team with three RBIs.
Henson had at least one hit in each game against Southwest to push her hitting streak to 17 games dating back to last season.
The Cowgirls improve to 12-3 on the season and will take some time off before playing Arlington Baptist for two games at Ellis Field on March 26 beginning at 5 p.m.
