LONGVIEW, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl softball team swept a doubleheader against the LeTourneau Yellowjackets on the road Friday night in American Southwest Conference play.
Hardin-Simmons took game one 10-0 against LeTourneau in five innings. The Cowgirls came on for six runs in the fifth inning to get the run rule and finished with 13 hits.
Gabby Montanez started and threw a shutout in game one with two hits given up to the Yellowjackets. She finished with one strikeout and improved her record to 12-0 on the year.
Five Cowgirls had two hits against LeTourneau in game one,
Ella Salinas,
Emily Jacobs,
Madi Hubbard, and
Grace Thompson. Salinas had a double and Thompson hit her second home run of the season in the fourth inning for three RBIs.
Thompson finished with five RBIs in the first game to lead the Cowgirls. Salinas had two RBIs and
Caitlin Clem and
Lindsey Ratcliffe each drove in one RBI for Hardin-Simmons.
LeTourneau stepped up in game two and hit three home runs to lead 3-1 in the first inning. The Cowgirls tied the game 3-3 in the second inning and led 6-3 after the fourth inning.
Caitlin Clem had a Cowgirl RBI in the first and
Libby Chapman stole home on a play in the second. Henson doubled for an RBI to make it 3-3 in the second inning.
Jacobs doubled for an RBI in the fourth and Salinas and Clem had RBI-singles to extend the lead to 6-3.
LeTourneau tied the game in the sixth inning at 6-6 before
Jazlynn Cantu drove in two runs for the Cowgirls in the seventh inning, leading to an 8-7 Cowgirl win.
Salinas finished going 4-4 at the plate in game two and
Haley Henson had three doubles for HSU.
Cantu and Clem each had two hits and two RBIs for the Cowgirls in the 8-7 win.
Akaysia Grogan started and threw five plus innings with a pair of strikeouts. The win went to Montanez in relief with an inning plus and a strikeout benefiting from the last-inning runs to go to 13-0 on the year.
The Cowgirls improved to 21-4 and 5-1 in the American Southwest Conference and will finish the four-game series with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon at the LETU softball field in Longview.
