BROWNWOOD, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl softball team defeated Howard Payne 10-1 and 7-0 in American Southwest Conference play on Saturday on the road with a milestone record from
Haley Henson with the most runs scored in Cowgirl history.
Henson had three hits and three runs in game one and a hit and two runs in game two, finishing the day with 51 runs scored this season and 125 runs scored in her career, setting the Cowgirl softball record in both categories. The previous records were 49 runs scored in a season by Courtney Clark (2009) and 120 runs scored in a career by Taylor Namey (2009-12).
She has had to be on base to score all of those runs, with a career batting average of .407, getting a bump this season hitting .496. She is also one of the most patient hitters with 64 career walks helping her to a career on-base percentage of .483.
The Cowgirls had a big scoring day at Howard Payne with wins of 10-1 and 7-0.
Gabby Montanez pitched game one with one run on four hits and struck out a pair in the complete seven innings for her 15
th win.
Akaysia Grogan took to the circle in game two with a complete-game shutout in seven innings of three-hit softball and struck out four for her ninth win.
Emily Jacobs led the Cowgirls with four hits and five RBIs in the 10-1 win, including two doubles. Henson had three hits and
Ella Salinas,
Madi Hubbard,
Grace Thompson, and
Kristen McMillan all had two hits in the game.
Salinas had a pair of hits with a triple and two RBIs in game two. Hubbard also had two hits for the second game of the day. The Cowgirls stole nine bases in the doubleheader with Howard Payne.
Hardin-Simmons improved to 29-4 on the season and went home with the milestone day for Henson. The ASC series will end on Sunday with two games at 12/2 p.m. at the Howard Payne softball field.
