ABILENE, Texas — No. 7 Hardin-Simmons turned a tense rivalry game into a second-half runaway, scoring 41 unanswered points after halftime to defeat McMurry 48-17 Saturday afternoon and retain possession of the Wilford Moore Trophy.
The victory pushed the Cowboys to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in American Southwest Conference play while extending their winning streak over the War Hawks to 12 games. McMurry fell to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in league play.
For much of the first half, McMurry looked poised to challenge the Cowboys yet again. Four of the previous five meetings had been decided by a single possession, and the
War Hawks carried a 10-7 lead into halftime after capitalizing on a pair of Hardin-Simmons turnovers. But the Cowboys responded with one of their most dominant stretches of football this season, outscoring their crosstown rival 41-7 over the final 30 minutes.
The Cowboys faced their biggest deficit of the season after McMurry used a 37-yard touchdown pass from Jess Hoel to Xavier Williams and a 22-yard field goal by Jax Rodriguez to claim a 10-7 halftime advantage.
The Cowboys had controlled possession and field position in the opening half, but fumbles deep in McMurry territory and an interception returned to the Hardin-Simmons 24-yard line kept the War Hawks in front. Hardin-Simmons' only first-half points came on a 10-play, 53-yard drive capped by a four-yard touchdown run from
Cayden Jones with 1:29 remaining in the opening quarter.
Everything changed after intermission, fueled by a standout effort on quick reaction forces and forcing three turnovers.
On McMurry's opening possession of the second half,
Colyn Donnelly sacked Hoel and forced a fumble that was recovered by
Lucas Ragsdale at the War Hawk 26-yard line. The Cowboys turned the takeaway into a 37-yard field goal by
Pedro Altamirano to tie the game at 10-10.
Moments later, the Hardin-Simmons defense struck again as Ragsdale stepped in front of a Hoel pass and returned the interception nine yards to the McMurry 1-yard line. On the next play, offensive lineman
Nate Rodriguez lined up in the backfield and powered into the end zone from one yard out, giving the Cowboys a 17-10 lead.
After another defensive stop, return specialist
Dylan Hardin electrified the Cowboys' sideline by fielding a punt at the HSU 25 and racing 75 yards for a touchdown. The return pushed the lead to 24-10 and represented another big-play by the QRF unit.
Altamirano added a 51-yard field goal midway through the third quarter, the second-longest field goal in HSU history, extending the lead to 27-10. The senior kicker finished 2-for-2 on field goals and continued an outstanding season after entering the day ranked second nationally in field goals made per game.
McMurry briefly answered with an 11-yard touchdown run by Leroy Rodriguez to cut the deficit to 27-17 late in the third quarter, but the Cowboys quickly slammed the door shut.
Early in the fourth quarter,
Jayden Moore blocked a McMurry punt and recovered it at the War Hawk 1-yard line. Two plays later, backup quarterback
Keagan Ables scored from one yard out to restore a three-touchdown margin.
All-American senior safety
Harrison Foster sealed McMurry's fate as the War Hawks marched deep into Hardin-Simmons territory reaching the Cowboys' 14-yard line. Foster intercepted a pass near the goal line and raced 97 yards for a touchdown, turning a potential 34-24 game into a 41-17 Hardin-Simmons advantage.
Freshman running back Tank Scott capped the scoring with a 36-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter. The sprint highlighted another productive day for Hardin-Simmons' evolving backfield.
The Cowboys finished with 426 yards of total offense and rushed for 282 yards on 43 attempts. Jones led the ground attack with 144 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries, averaging 8.5 yards per rush. Scott added 52 yards and a score, while quarterback
Ty Thompson contributed 59 rushing yards.
Through the air, Thompson completed 14 of 24 passes for 113 yards, while Ables added a 31-yard completion.
Justin Herman led Hardin-Simmons receivers with 55 yards on three catches, and
Wes Douglas added four receptions for 49 yards.
Although McMurry accumulated 334 passing yards, Hardin-Simmons' defense once again dominated at the line of scrimmage. The Cowboys held the War Hawks to just 13 rushing yards on 22 carries, extending a season-long trend that has placed HSU among the nation's leaders in rushing defense.
The defensive front generated four sacks and forced multiple game-changing turnovers. Donnelly recorded a sack, forced fumble and eight tackles.
Kaiden Roden led the team with 11 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Foster added seven tackles, forced a fumble and returned an interception for a touchdown, while Ragsdale contributed a fumble recovery and interception
McMurry quarterbacks Hoel and Carson Roper combined to complete 31 of 48 passes for 334 yards but were intercepted three times and sacked four times. Jadyn Pruitt paced the War Hawks with 83 receiving yards, while Thomas Chandler added six catches for 63 yards.
The victory keeps Hardin-Simmons unbeaten heading into next week's Homecoming matchup with East Texas Baptist at Shelton Stadium.
