ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowboy tennis team split the day with two teams, playing against Weatherford College at home and playing at Howard Payne after weather delays in the morning.
The Cowboys went down 7-0 to Weatherford College out of the NJCAA. The Coyotes have four individuals inside the top 50 of the ITA rankings, including Matteo Cardoso ranked No. 7 in the nation.
Maddux Foster and
Kayden Lengacher took the second doubles match win for HSU 6-4 against Pasco and Serrano.
Payne Smith won a set in the split-set defeat to No.7 Cardoso at first flight singles, and
Brandon Curiel also took a set off Asker Ongaro, who is ranked No. 31 in the ITAs, in the fourth singles match.
Cowboys
Wyatt Terrell and
Devin Simmons competed in exhibitions against the Coyotes of Weatherford College, dropping a tight doubles match and a singles match each against the NJCAA team.
Hardin-Simmons had a second team competing at Howard Payne in Brownwood. The original double-header was changed to one game due to weather delays. HSU won 7-0 against Howard Payne on Saturday night.
Jameson Sorrel and Conner Hubbert had a match unfinished in doubles thanks to weather. HSU teams of
Phoenix Davis and
Gavin Hail won 6-1 in the second doubles match and
Leevi Knight and
Luke Leavelle won 6-4 in the third.
Davis won the top singles match 6-4, 6-4 for the Cowboys and Sorrell won the second singles match 7-5, 6-2.
Hubbert won 6-4, 6-2 in the third singles match, Hail won 6-2, 6-4 in the fourth, and Leavelle won 6-0, 6-0 in the fifth singles match.
Josh Miller won 6-2, 6-2 in the sixth flight of singles at Howard Payne.
The Cowboys open the spring season 1-1 on the year and will host Texas Wesleyan on Feb. 21 at 9 a.m. in Abilene at the Streich Tennis Center.
