Cowboys Drop A Pair Late
JACKSON, Miss. – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team went to the bottom of the ninth leading in a pair of games and dropped them both falling 7-6 to both North Park and Belhaven at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Miss. Â
In the first game, starter
Jack Kimsey was solid for the Cowboys, as he allowed just one earned run over seven innings of work. He allowed just two hits and struck out seven.
Garrett Keller allowed three runs in the eighth inning and
Ethan Cloudt took the loss allowing a run in the ninth inning.
North Park scored three runs in the first inning, including two unearned runs.
HSU battled back scoring a run on an error in the second and
Justin Blancaflor added an RBI double.
Jacob Hollingsworth had a two-run double in the fifth to tie the game and
Brock Calvillo added a two-run triple later in the inning to give the Cowboys a 5-3 lead.
Karson Leatherwood gave the Cowboys a 6-3 with a solo home run in the eighth inning.
NPU tied the game in the eighth with a two-run single by Vinnie Marvucic and an Eli Johnson RBI double.
HSU threatened in the ninth but did not score and North Park won the game on a fielder's choice.
North Park;'s bullpen of LeBaron Lee and Ethan Condit shut the Cowboys down the final five innings allowing just six hits and one run. Condit earned the win to improve to 1-0.
In the nightcap, the Cowboys jumped out to an early 6-0 lead.
Brock Calvillo brought home a run with a groundout in the first. In the second inning, HSU scored five times.
Justin Blancaflor had a two-run single and
Catcher Ridings, Calvillo and
Gavin Bruning all had RBI singles.
Starter
Caleb Reynolds went five innings, allowing just two runs and two hits. He struck out eight batters, but also walked eight batters.
Bo Bolton worked an inning and a third of relief allowing one run. Cloudt came in to finish the seventh and worked a scoreless eighth. He started the ninth and allowed a run on a bases loaded hit by pitch. He left with the bases loaded.
Van Brady came on walked a batter and hit a batter with the bases loaded to plate runners to tie the game.Â
Kannon Baird came on and Austin Canale drove in the winning run with a single.
Belhaven scored a run in the second and again in the fifth on wild pitches and Belhaven scored a run in the seventh on a bases-loaded hit by pitch.
Hollingsworth led the Cowboys with four hits. Ridings and Calvillo each had two hits for the Cowboys. Â
HSU is now 7-6 overall and North Park is 2-2. Belhaven moved to 5-0. HSU will play Millsaps on Saturday at noon. Â
