Hardin-Simmons Powers Past Schreiner

ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons erupted for 16 runs on 21 hits and cruised to a 16-2 victory over Schreiner on Tuesday night at Hunter Field.

Hardin-Simmons wasted no time setting the tone, plating six runs in the first inning and never looking back. The Cowboys added runs in every inning but the sixth and eighth, taking advantage of timely hitting and defensive miscues by Schreiner, who committed three errors.

In the first inning, the Cowboys batted around with Brock Calvillo, Jacob Hollingsworth, Catcher Ridings, Gavin Bruning, Paul Samaripa, and Benji Fielder all recording hits in the first.

Samaripa led the HSU offense with two home runs and six RBIs. Bruning had four hits while Ridings had three. The Cowboys capitalized on extra-base power, collecting three doubles, three triples, and two home runs as part of their 21-hit outburst.

21 total players made an appearance for the Cowboys. RayShawn Riley came in and played right field and collected two hits. Jimmy Mathis came in behind the plate and had an RBI single. Keaton Schwestka also collected a hit. Evan Giles, Dane DeLugo, Mike Lozano, Hunter Molinar, Caden Ramsey, and Karson Leatherwood all entered the game as well.

Senior Caleb Reynolds got the start for HSU and pitched another gem. He went seven innings, giving up three hits and striking out eight. Ian Bamburg came in and pitched the eighth inning with three strikeouts. Freshman Noah Cervantes got his first college appearance in the ninth, allowing a run and picking up two strikeouts.

Reynolds got the win for the Cowboys, improving to 4-2 on the year. Nolan Harris picked up the loss for Schreiner and dropped to 0-1 on the season.

Schreiner managed just six hits and was held scoreless through seven innings before pushing across runs in the eighth and ninth. The Mountaineers also struck out 13 times.

Hardin-Simmons improved to 14-9 on the season while Schreiner dropped to 10-14. HSU will be back in action tomorrow afternoon, taking on the University of Dallas on the road with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
