ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowboy and Cowgirl tennis teams dropped the opening match of American Southwest Conference play on Saturday to Mary Hardin-Baylor, with the women down 6-1 and the men dropping the final match 4-3 at the Streich Tennis Center.
The Cowgirls took the first flight doubles match with
Sydney Tomlin and
Brenna Gordon winning 7-5.
Tomlin won again at the first flight of singles for the point, winning 5-7, 6-0, 6-3 in a comeback against Jolin Ha.
The Cowboys went down to the final pairing in the 4-3 loss on Saturday. HSU dropped the point at doubles but won in first flight with
Payne Smith and
Gabriel Harris, winning 7-6(7-5) over Langle and Savi.
Brandon Curiel won quickly at four singles 6-0, 6-2 against UMHB before the Crusaders won a flight to go up 2-1.
Smith defeated Savi 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 in a split at first flight singles to tie the match. UMHB went up 3-2 before a Cowboy win from
Maddux Foster in second flight singles tied the match 3-3. Foster won 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
UMHB took the final match to win 4-3.
Hardin-Simmons tennis will travel to play at Schreiner on Thursday, April 2 in Kerrville, Texas at 1 p.m. before a weekend in San Antonio, Texas.
