GEORGETOWN, Texas — Hardin-Simmons senior right-hander
Caleb Reynolds set a single-game school record with 17 strikeouts as the Cowboys won the second game of a doubleheader at Southwestern, 7-0, on Thursday night.
Reynolds set a new Hardin-Simmons single-game strikeout record with 17 strikeouts, all of which were swinging. The previous record was held by Tim Kriegel, who had 14 against Howard Payne in 2010. Reynolds went eight and a third innings, scattering eight hits with only one walk given up.
Bradley Fletcher came in and got the last two outs via the strikeout. The 19 combined strikeouts set a new team record for strikeouts. The previous record was 16 against Whittier in 2013.
Hardin-Simmons jumped ahead early when
Catcher Ridings launched a solo home run to center field in the first inning. The Cowboys added another run in the second after
Paul Samaripa scored on an infield error.
Ridings struck again in the fifth with his second solo homer of the game to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Cowboys continued to add on throughout the game.
Karson Leatherwood drove in a run with a single in the sixth before Hardin-Simmons scored twice in the seventh on an RBI double by Samaripa and an RBI single from
Cannon Negron.
Hardin-Simmons capped the scoring in the eighth when
Jacob Hollingsworth singled home Leatherwood.
Ridings finished 2-for-5 with two home runs and two RBIs, while Samaripa went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Negron added two hits, an RBI, and three stolen bases for the Cowboys, who totaled 11 hits in the win.
Reynolds moved to 2-2 on the year after picking up the win. Darion Rogers took the loss for the Pirates after allowing three runs over five innings.
In the first game of the series, the Cowboys fell 13-7.
Hardin-Simmons jumped out to an early lead, but Southwestern used a seven-run sixth inning to rally past the Cowboys for a 13–7 win Thursday afternoon.
Hardin-Simmons took control in the third inning when
Paul Samaripa hit a three-run home run, and
Justin Blancaflor followed later in the inning with a two-run homer to give the Cowboys a 6–3 lead. The Cowboys added another run in the fourth on an RBI bunt single by
Hunter Molinar, stretching the lead to 7–4.
Southwestern slowly chipped away before breaking the game open in the sixth. The Pirates scored seven runs in the inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Owen Stevenson and a two-run double from Connor Daley, turning a one-run deficit into a six-run lead.
Hardin-Simmons finished with 11 hits in the game. Samaripa led the Cowboys at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a home run, while Blancaflor added a home run and two RBIs.
Jacob Hollingsworth and
Catcher Ridings each recorded two hits.
Jack Kimsey got the start for the Cowboys and went three innings, allowing eight hits and gave up six runs.
Payne Lochridge earned the win in relief for Southwestern, allowing one run over four innings with three strikeouts.
Garrett Keller took the loss in relief for Hardin-Simmons.
Southwestern totaled 15 hits, with Alex Ervesun going 3-for-5 and Tres Organ adding two hits, two RBIs, and three runs scored.
The series will conclude tomorrow afternoon against Southwestern, with first pitch set for 3 p.m. from Georgetown
