MARSHALL, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl softball team went down late against No. 4 East Texas Baptist in the first two games of a four-game American Southwest Conference series beginning Thursday night on the road.
The series with ETBU was moved up a day due to weather coming in later in the weekend, and scoring was at a premium against the No. 4 team in the NFCA poll.
The Cowgirls led 1-0 with a run in the third inning of game one on an
Ella Salinas RBI. The Tigers answered with an RBI in the bottom half to tie the game 1-1 and scored two more on a homerun in the fourth inning, which was the difference in the 3-1 win for ETBU.
Game two was much of the same for the Cowgirls, who tied the game 1-1 in the fourth inning with an
Emily Jacobs' RBI single. Another ETBU homerun scored two in the sixth and the home team added another to win 4-1 over Hardin-Simmons.
The Cowgirls had nine hits in game one and five hits in game two.
Kinzley Cantu,
Madi Hubbard, and
Emily Jacobs each had two hits in game one.
Kinzley Cantu had two more hits in game two, including a double.
Kimma Kincaid started in the circle in game one with the loss on 3.1 innings of five-hit softball for three runs.
Bree Battenfelder threw 2.2 innings and allowed three hits to finish the game.
Akaysia Grogan started and went the distance in six innings in the loss in game two with three strikeouts on four runs and eight hits allowed.
The Cowgirls go to 19-9 and 5-5 on the season in ASC play and will face the No. 4 ETBU team again at 12 and 2 p.m. in Friday afternoon in Marshall.
