ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowboy soccer team earned the first win of the
Austin Guest era at HSU on Thursday night, defeating the University of Dallas 3-0 at the HSU Soccer Complex on Grape Street.
Coach Guest was named the Cowboy head coach earlier in 2026 and added
Kyle Hewerdine to his staff as the assistant coach. Coach Guest added one more win to his decorated history, previously at the high school level where he totaled over 800 wins.
Landon Newman earned a penalty kick for the Cowboys in the 18
th minute and finished it himself on the penalty for a goal to lead 1-0 at halftime.
Korbin Raef scored for the first time this season after a great assist from
Gabriel Rodriguez in the 62
nd minute to get HSU up 2-0.
Newman scored his second goal of the night in the 84
th minute after a ball in from
Ethan Sam and a one-timer through the weeds by
Easton Hedge to make it a nice round 3-0 win for the Cowboys.
A physical contest between HSU and Dallas had 23 fouls and seven individual yellow cards awarded. Hardin-Simmons actually trailed Dallas with 17 shots to 25 total shots, with many errant attempts from the visitors.
For the shots put on target, the Cowboy keeper squad of
Joel McPherson in the first half and
Joaquin Sanchez in the second combined for the shutout win. McPherson finished with five saves and Sanchez totaled three stopped shots.
The Cowboys went to 1-2 on the year and will return to play the University of St. Thomas (TX) on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the HSU Soccer Complex.
