ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowboy soccer team went down 2-1 to Lyon College in the first home game of the season at the HSU Soccer Complex on Saturday night.
Hardin-Simmons had a goal from
Landon Newman on a great finish from a free kick from
Gael Zuniga in the 35
th minute.
Lyon rebounded and scored a goal in the 35
th minute as well to tie the game 1-1. Lyon added a goal in the 64
th minute to take the match 2-1.
The Cowboys pressed and forced some great chances late, but didn't finish any for goal in the final minutes. HSU led with 18 shots to 14 shots from Lyon. Each team put six shots on goal. The Cowboys also forced ten corner kicks in the game.
Joel McPherson started in goal for the Cowboys and had four highlight saves in the first half with one goal allowed.
Joaquin Sanchez played the second 45 minutes for HSU and had one goal allowed in the loss.
The Cowboys end the first weekend 0-2 and will return to the HSU Soccer Complex on Thursday, Sept. 10 against the University of Dallas with kickoff at 7 p.m. in Abilene.
