IRVING, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl volleyball team split opening day playing at the University of Dallas, dropping a match 3-2 to Paul Quinn and winning 3-0 against University of Dallas on Friday night.
The Cowgirls dropped game one 3-2 (25-19, 19-25, 16-25, 25-24, 12-15) to Paul Quinn College Tigers out of the NAIA playing at the University of Dallas. Hardin-Simmons trailed in the fifth set by five points before a rally to make it down only 13-12. Paul Quinn went on to win 15-12 to take the match.
Allison O'Shaughnessy had 43 of the 60 HSU assists for a career high against Paul Quinn. The Cowgirl volleyball record is 65 assists in a match, set by Amanda Curry against Texas Lutheran in 2006.
Freshman
Addy Delgado led the team with 15 kills, hitting .500 on 26 attacks with only two errors.
Molly O'Shaughnessy hit 13, and
Rachel Nordt hit 11 kills for the Cowgirls.
Brylee Pursley led with 15 digs and
Molly O'Shaughnessy added 12 digs. Nordt and
Allison O'Shaughnessy had ten digs each, all three with a double-double.
Addy Cunningham and
Whitlee Blacklock both had ten digs as well for Hardin-Simmons.
The Cowgirls had a long break and didn't get started until late for game two of the night, wrapping up the 3-0 sweep against the host University of Dallas around midnight.
The Cowgirls won 25, 19, 25-22, 25-18 against the Crusaders in game two. Delgado led the team again with 11 kills in the win.
The Cowgirls scored seven aces against Dallas, three from transfer
Madeleine Hanson, and two each from Pursley and Delgado.
Allison O'Shaughnessy finished with 15 assists and Hanson contributed 13 assists in the win. Delgado also led the team with nine digs against Dallas.
Hardin-Simmons started the season 1-1 and will play again tomorrow, this time at Austin College in Sherman, Texas. The Cowgirls will face Concordia Texas at 11 a.m. and the host Kangaroos at 3 p.m. to finish the weekend.
