VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl soccer team dropped a match 2-0 to Batten University, formerly Virginia Wesleyan, on Sunday morning to wrap up the road trip.
Virginia Wesleyan was renamed Batten University in July of 2026 in honor of the philanthropic legacy and major financial contributions of Jane and Frank Batten, who was the co-founder of The Weather Channel.
The Marlins scored a goal to lead 1-0 in the 23
rd minute against the Cowgirls, and were handed another opportunity on a penalty kick in the 34
th minute, which Batten converted for a 2-0 lead that would be the final score on Sunday.
Batten led with 16 shots and ten shots on goal, while Hardin-Simmons shot the ball five times with one shot on goal. Batten had five corner kicks to the three forced by the Cowgirls.
The game was quite physical and had a heavy hand from the officials, with 29 total fouls leading to free kicks and the penalty kick. HSU had 19 fouls called on the Cowgirls, and Batten received ten fouls.
The Cowgirls fell to 0-1-1 after the draw with Christopher Newport to start the weekend. Hardin-Simmons will return to Texas for their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 12 against Texas A&M-Victoria at 4 pm. At the HSU Soccer Complex.
