Jeff Whitehead

Whitehead is in his 15th season as the offensive coordinator for the Cowboys.

He is in charge of the Cowboys’ quarterbacks. The Cowboys have set all kinds of offensive records under his tutelage, including individual rushing, passing and receiving single-game records and also team total yards, passing, rushing and scoring records. His offense is routinely one of the top offenses in the nation. The Cowboys averaged 48.3 points per game in 2019, which is a school record. 

In 2024, HSU had nine first-team all-ASC selections on offense and 13 players earned all-league honors. 

Kevi Evans set the school record for receiving yards in a game with 269 at Louisiana College and Jaquan Hemphill had a school-record 306 rushing yards against Texas Lutheran. Corey Jones Jones had a school-record five-touchdown game against Texas Lutheran

He has coached four ASC offensive players of the year - Jaquan Hemphill (2), Kerry Sloan and Jessie Ramos. 

In 2012, the Cowboys had the top statistical offense in school history, averaging 558.4 yards and almost 48 points per contest. HSU was second in the nation in offense, first in passing offense and fourth in scoring offense.Also in 2012, HSU combined with Sul Ross State to set the record for most yards ever in an NCAA football game with 1714. HSU had an NCAA Division III record 914 of those yards. The game featured 44 NCAA, Division III, American Southwest Conference and Hardin-Simmons records.

Quarterback Logan Turner earned all-America honors after throwing for 4,116 yards and 43 touchdowns in 10 games. He threw for an ASC record 685 yards and eight touchdowns in a win over Sul Ross State. He had five games over 400 yards that season. 

Another area of responsibility for Whitehead is academics and the Cowboys had the most players in the ASC named to the academic all-conference team again last season.

He came to HSU after a highly successful eight-year run as the offensive coordinator at Wimberley High School, which included a 3A state championship in 2005. They went to the semifinals in 2010. The 2007 coaching staff at Wimberley coached a victorious South team in the Texas High School Coaches Association all-star game. Whitehead also spent two years as the offensive coordinator at Tornillo High School. In all, he won seven district titles in 10 seasons on the high school level and coached three all-state quarterbacks.

Whitehead cut his playing career short to learn the details of coaching from legendary coach Jimmie Keeling. He spent time in the Cowboy program as a junior varsity quarterback, one year on the varsity and then as a student assistant.

The Glen Rose native, earned a bachelor’s degree in behavioral science from Hardin-Simmons. He is married to the former Kendra Anderson, who is the head women's basketball coach at Hardin-Simmons. He has a stepdaughter, Kaylee.
