Jean Fuels HSU Overtime Win Over UTT

TYLER, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team broke its four-game losing streak with a dramatic 74-72 overtime win over UT-Tyler Saturday afternoon in American Southwest Conference action at the Herrington Patriot Center in Tyler.

Mardochee Jean led the Cowboys with a career-best 34 points and he also hauled in 11 rebounds. HSU overcame a 59-45 deficit in the last seven minutes of the game. The Cowboys had a 14-1 run fueled by six points by Jean to cut the deficit to 60-59 with 4:09 to play.

UTT then pushed the lead right back to six points at 65-59 and HSU responded again. Jean hit a pair of free throws and then Casey Riddle got a steal and was fouled shooting and hit two more free throws and Steven Luckey hit a baseline jumper to tie the game at 65-65. HSU has a late possession but Luckey was called for an offensive foul and then Brandon Weasby missed a desperation attempt for UTT to send the game to overtime.

HSU took control of the overtime, when Jean had four points, Ryan Ocheskey hit his second 3-pointer of the game and Rob Yeatts hit a pair of free throws. Yeatts was the only other Cowboy in double figures with 11 points.

Weasby had 17 and Anthony Reese 13 for UTT.

HSU is now 5-7 overall and 4-4 in ASC play. UTT fell to 6-7 overall and 5-3 in ASC play. HSU hosts nationally-ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor on Thursday at the Mabee Complex.
