ABILENE, Texas -
Hardin-Simmons' senior center Mardochee Jean exploded for 21 points, 18 rebounds, seven assists and four blocks to power the Cowboys past Concordia (Texas) in American Southwest Conference West Division basketball action at the Mabee Complex.
Jean needs six steals to become only the second player in NCAA Division III history with 1,000 points, 800 rebounds, 250 blocks, 150 assists and 100 steals in a career.
The win was the Cowboys third straight. It evened the Cowboy record at 7-7 overall and 6-4 and Concordia fell to 8-6 overall and 5-5 in league play.
HSU played a suffocating 2-3 zone for most of the game against the Tornados. Concordia shot 33.8 percent for the game and HSU dominated the glass 47-34. The 68 points were the second fewest the Tornados have scored in a game. They came into the game averaging 89.5 points per game.
Concordia had their biggest and only leads early in the game leading 5-2 at the 19:01 mark. HSU went on a 21-4 run to make it 23-9 at the 11:21 mark and Concordia was never closer than four the rest of the first half and HSU led 37-31 at the break.
In the second half, HSU pushed the lead out to 17 at 70-53 with 5:43 to play. HSU never led by less than 10 points the final 9:55 of the game.
Jean got plenty of help from his brother Dan, who tied his career-high with 14 points and he also hauled in a career best 11 rebounds.
Rob Yeatts hit for 15 points and Marcus Smith had his best game in a while with 13 points.
HSU frustrated the Tornados Valentino Maxwell into a 4-for-18 shooting night. He had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Joel McDonald had 13 points to pace Concordia.
The Cowboys conclude their three-game homestand with the 11th Annual Kiwanis Club of Abilene Basketball Shootout on Monday against McMurry at 7:30 p.m.
