WACO, Texas -- Hardin-Simmons'
men's basketball team was overmatched in its season opener
against Division I Baylor, falling 106-45 Sunday afternoon at the
Ferrell Center in Waco.
The Cowboys only had one lead in the game at 3-2 when freshman Zach
Rule hit a 3-pointer on the first HSU possession. It was the first
of six 3-pointers in his HSU debut.
Baylor used its size advantage to shoot a school record 63.6
percent from the field. The Bears had 13 dunks in the game. Baylor
started players that were 6-10, 6-10 and 7-0 compared to the Cowboy
front line of 6-6, 6-4 and 6-4. Baylor outscored the Cowboys 58-4
in the paint.
HSU competed with the Bears early on as it was 15-10 at the 12:10
mark of the first half, but Baylor put away any HSU hopes of a
shocker with a 24-2 run over the next 6:29 to take a 39-12 lead.
Baylor finished the first half with a 56-19 lead. The run pushed to
65-14 and Baylor led 82-27.
The Cowboys had their best run in the middle of the second half,
when HSU had a 17-10 run. Rule had four 3-pointers in the run and
fellow freshman John Derr had a 4-point play.
Rule led the Cowboys with 18 points in the game and Derr added
10.
LaceDarius Dunn led Baylor with 27 points, including seven
3-pointers. Ekpe Udoh had 13 points and 11 rebounds.
The Bears improved to 4-0 on the year and HSU is 0-1. HSU will host
Southwestern on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Hardin-Simmons, which returned only five players with a total of 21
starts for last season's 9-16 squad, dropped to 0-23 against NCAA
Division I competition since dropping from that level in 1990.
