BROWNWOOD, Texas — Hardin-Simmons'
rally against Howard Payne came up just short as HPU blocked a last
second shot by Carlos Singer to preserve a 69-68 American Southwest
Conference win at the Brownwood Coliseum on Thursday night.
The Cowboys trailed by as many as 11 points in the second half, but
Singer, Mark Schlott and Steven Wesley combined to score 37 points
in the second half to keep the Cowboys in the game. HSU cut the
deficit to 69-68 on a Schlott tip-in with :38 to play.
HSU then forced a turnover with Casey Riddle getting a steal and
then the Singer drove the ball on the left side and pulled up for a
game-winner but freshman Brandon Irwin was there for the block.
Singer led the Cowboys with 19 points, all in the second half, and
Wesley added 18.
HPU's two seniors Bryan Blalock (18) and Tom Hermann (15) led
the scoring effort for the Yellowjackets.
The Cowboys fell to 7-15 on the year and to 6-12 in ASC play. HPU
improved to 6-16 and also moved to 6-12 in ASC play. Hardin-Simmons
will play at Sul Ross State on Saturday at 3 p.m.
