ABILENE, Texas — Carlos Singer dropped a career-best
40 points and hit a school non-scholarship era record nine
3-pointers as Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team
beat Howard Payne 92-79 in American Southwest Conference action at
the Mabee Complex on Thursday evening.
Singer scored the 40 points on just 15 shots from the field. He was
9-for-11 from 3-point range 12-of-15 from the field overall and
7-of-10 from the free throw line. He scored 24 of the 40 points in
the second half, despite missing almost six minutes when he picked
up his fourth foul.
The Cowboys raced out to a 15-3 early lead and never trailed in the
game. The Cowboys made a season-best 16 3-pointers in the game with
eight coming in each half.
Singer broke the school record of seven 3-pointers in a game
previously held by John Derr, Zach Pickelman and Brad Waters.
The Cowboys pushed the lead out to 23 points at 64-41 with 14:16 to
play and Howard Payne chipped away and eventually got it to single
digits at 82-73, but that is as close as the Jackets would get.
Ryan Carlson had 13 points and John Derr added 13 for HSU. Casey
Riddle had nine points, eight assists and six rebounds. John Bryant
had 20 points off the bench to lead HPU and Henry Valladares had 13
points.
The loss snapped the Cowboys four-game losing streak and pulled
them to within two games of the fourth and final playoff berth in
the American Southwest Conference. The Cowboys host fourth-place
Sul Ross State on Saturday.
HSU is now 5-17 on the year and 5-13 in ASC play. Howard Payne fell
to 6-16 overall and 6-12 in conference action.
