Cowboys Rally For Win

KERRVILLE, Texas  — Hardin-Simmons' basketball team used a strong second half to beat Schreiner 95-80 on Saturday afternoon in American Southwest Conference action at the Edington Center in Kerrville.

The Mountaineers took a 48-35 halftime lead by shooting 53 percent in the first half and not committing a turnover. SU pushed the lead out to 16 points early in the second half.

HSU cut the deficit to 55-46 with 16:54 to play on an Eric Taylor 3-pointer. It was 58-46 after a Steven Guerrero 3-point play and the HSU scored 11 straight points to cut the deficit to 58-57 on a pair of Jeff Holland free throws with 14:54 to play.

The Cowboys took their first lead of the second half at 65-64 on a John Derr 3-pointer with 9:54 to play and it started a 13-0 run that gave HSU a 75-64 lead with 7:13 to play.  HSU never trailed again.

HSU shot 58.6 percent in the second half and 52.6 percent in the game. HSU was 10-for-16 from 3-point range.

Derr led the Cowboys with a season-best 25 points. Andy Spears added 17 points and 11 rebounds and Eric Taylor had 15 points. Darius Singletary had 13 points and Bernard Stiggers had 12 points.

Manny Longoria led Schreiner with 17 points and Stevan Guerrero added 15 points and AJ Myres added 14 points. 

HSU is now 15-10 on the year and finished 12-7 in ASC action. The Cowboys finished third in the ASC West and will play UT-Tyler on Friday at 2:30 p.m. in the ASC Tournament in Richardson. Schreiner finished the season 11-14 overall and 8-11 in league play. The Mountaineers will be the No. 4 seed from the ASC West in the ASC Tournament.
