Box Score GEORGETOWN, Texas -- Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team moved to 2-0 with a 70-57 win over Southwestern on Saturday night at the Robertson Center in Georgetown.
The Cowboys led throughout the game, but the Pirates cut the Cowboys' lead to 51-46 with 10:42 to play. HSU regained its composure after Derrick Jefferson was called for a foul and then a technical that fouled him out with 12:08 to play. He had 20 points at the time.
Cameron Barnes and Christian O'Neal scored four points each in a 12-2 run that gave the Cowboys a 64-51 lead with 4:42 to play.
After Southwestern answered with a 3-pointer Duane Hopper hit a 4-point play and the Cowboys held on for the victory.
HSU jumped to an early 10-2 lead and led 22-11 after a Jefferson put back dunk with 7:11 to play in the first half. Ryan Leiss had a layup on a nice assist by Justin Jones to give HSU its biggest lead of the half at 39-22 and the Cowboys led 40-26 at halftime.
O'Neal led the Cowboys with 21 points, Jefferson had 20 and Barnes added 13. Travis Kurtz led a balanced Southwestern attack with nine points.
The Cowboys will next be in action on Monday when it travels to former conference foe Schreiner for a 7:30 game. Southwestern fell to 0-2 with the loss.
