Jefferson's Late Free Throws Lifts Cowboys

Box Score

KERRVILLE, Texas -- Hardin-Simmons senior forward Derrick Jefferson missed a potential game-winning shot, but in a weird turn of events he eventually hit the game-winning free throws as the Cowboys' men's basketball team came away with a 59-58 win over Schreiner on Monday night at the Edington Center in Kerrville.

Maverick Harris had given Schreiner a 58-57 lead with a 3-pointer with 29 seconds to play. HSU worked for a final shot and Jefferson's 15-footer fell off the rim. HSU fouled with .44 seconds to play. Schreiner then took the ball in celebration and threw it into the rafters resulting in a technical foul.

Jefferson stepped to the line with no-one else around and drained both free throws to give the Cowboys the win.

The Cowboys had made a nice rally. HSU trailed 51-37 with 10:19 to play. HSU then went on a 15-0 run to take the lead. The run was fueled by Nathaniel Jack, who had 10 points and three steals in the run.

Jefferson had 16 points, five rebound and five steals for the Cowboys. Jack had 12 points and nine rebounds and Nate Lewis had 15 points, 13 of which came in the first half.

Steven Guerrero had 16 points and eight assists for Schreiner. Phillip Kee had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

HSU is 3-0 on the year and Schreiner fell to 2-2. The Cowboys open conference play on Saturday at UT-Dallas.
