Box Score ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team won for the 11th time in 12 games with an 89-67 win over Sul Ross State in American Southwest Conference action at the Mabee Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The Cowboys dominated the game from the opening tip, jumping out to a quick 13-2 lead. Sul Ross trimmed the deficit to 19-14 with 10:11 to play in the first half and that was as close as the Lobos would be the rest of the way. Jim Walter's 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer gave HSU a 36-27 lead at the intermission.
HSU turned it up even more in the second half and led by as many as 28 points.
The Cowboy defense had a great day as SRSU shot just 29.4 percent and HSU had 12 blocked shots. In the second half, the Lobos hit just 10-of-40 shots. The Cowboys' bench outscored Sul Ross State 37-19.
Derrick Jefferson led a balanced Cowboy effort with 18 points, six rebounds and four assists in just 25 minutes. Charles Sams had 15 points and John Barnes had 12 points four rebounds and four assists. Freshman Justin Jones had 11 points, seven rebounds and five blocks. HSU had eight players with at least seven points.
Ryan Hagan led Sul Ross state with 14 points, Mychal Pinson had 13 on 4-of-18 shooting and Percy Settle had 12 points and 10 rebounds.
HSU is now 12-7 on the year and 12-4 in conference play. Sul Ross State fell to 8-11 overall and 7-9 in league play. The Cowboys will play at Louisiana College and Mississippi College next week.
