Box Score ABILENE, Texas – He's always been known as an all-around player, but Saturday Hardin-Simmons senior Derrick Jefferson took it to another level with the first triple-double in non-scholarship era school history in an 89-66 win over conference contender Louisiana College.
Jefferson had to take over the point guard position with starter Christian O'Neal out with injury and the preseason all-American forward proved he can do that to. He led the Cowboys with 22 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.
The final assist came on his final play of the day. He drove the lane and kicked out to a wide-open Charles Sams who buried a 3-pointer from the corner to put the capper on the emphatic win with 2:49 to play. He came out of the game after that.
HSU took control of the game early on leading 10-2 just 3:20 into the game and the Cowboys never trailed. The Cowboys led by as many 18 on a couple of occasions in the first half.
HSU pushed the lead out to 25 early in the second half and the Wildcats never were closer than 17 the rest of the way.
Jefferson led four HSU players in double figures. Duane Hopper had a career-best 19 points and added seven rebounds and five 3-pointers. Justin Jones had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds and Cameron Barnes added 14 points.
The Cowboys limited LC to 37.7 percent shooting and outrebounded them 48-33. Anthony Gaines had 14 points and Steve Evans added 14 points and 16 rebounds for LC.
HSU is 10-1 on the season and 6-0 in conference play. LC fell to 3-5 and to 3-2 in league play. HSU hosts LeTourneau on Thursday in its next action.
