Box Score ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team got back in the win column with a 82-69 victory over Southwestern on Saturday afternoon at the Mabee Complex.
Justin Jones had a dominating performance on the inside with 17 points, 17 rebounds and eight blocked shots and he also dished out four assists. He paced five Cowboys in double figures.
Duane Hopper had 12 points and 10 rebounds,
Caleb Spoon added 12 points and
Dashun Dixon and
Christian O'Neal had 10 points each.
HSU had a big advantage on the backboards, outrebounding the Pirates 50-36 and Hsu had a 40-26 advantage in points in the paint. The Cowboys also had an 18-4 advantage in fast break points.
The Cowboys shot 47.8 percent from the field and held Southwestern to 35.9 percent shooting. The Pirates hung around with an 18-for-22 performance at the free throw line, compared to 10-of-20 for the Cowboys.
HSU never trailed in the game and led by as many as 19 points in the second half.
Connor Kim had 23 points to lead Southwestern, Karrey Sanders had 22 points off the bench and Ryan Ogden had 13 points and 12 rebounds also off the bench. No Pirate starter other than Kim had more than three points.
HSU is now 3-3 on the year and Southwestern fell to 2-3. The Cowboys open conference play at Louisiana College and defending league champion East Texas Baptist next week on the road.
