Box Score ABILENE, Texas – Cameron Barnes exploded for a career-best 29 points as the Cowboys rolled over Texas-Tyler 93-79 in American Southwest Conference action at the Mabee Complex on Monday evening.
Barnes hit 11-of-18 shots, including 5-of-10 from 3-point range, on the night and eclipsed his previous best of 21 points. Barnes is the lone senior for the Cowboys.
The Cowboys busted open a 24-24 game with quick 9-0 run from the 8:12 mark to the 6:45 mark of the first half. Four different Cowboys scored in the run and
Duane Hopper capped it with a 3-pointer. HSU continued to push out the lead to as many as 15 before settling for a 48-37 halftime lead.
UT-Tyler chipped away at the deficit and closed the gap to 59-55 with 12:44 to play, but Barnes scored 13 straight points for the Cowboys, including three from behind the 3-point arc.
Chase Scott's first career basket capped the run and HSU led 74-61 with 6:54 to play.
Barnes was one of five Cowboys in double figures.
Nathaniel Jack had 15 points and 16 rebounds in the game,
Duane Hopper had 12 points and
Christian O'Neal and
Dashun Dixon each added 11.
Deon Rodgers and Demarcus Metcalf had 16 points each and Anthony Gonzales added 14 for the Patriots. UT-Tyler scored 63 of its 79 points in the paint.
HSU is now 6-4 on the year and 3-1 in ASC action. UT-Tyler fell to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in league play. The Cowboys will play an exhibition game against Baylor on Wednesday at Ft. Hood to close out the fall semester. The game will be aired on Fox Sports Southwest.
