Box Score ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team pushed its winning streak to five games with a 69-64 American Southwest Conference win over Texas Dallas on Thursday evening at the Mabee Complex.
UTD came out hot early and led 15-7, before the Cowboys responded with 16 straight points to take a 23-15 lead. In the run
Caleb Spoon hit three straight 3-pointers and
Duane Hopper closed the run with a three of his own.
The Cowboys never trailed the rest of the night and led 34-28 at halftime. In the second half, Hopper and
Christian O'Neal hit back-to-back 3-pointers to five HSU its biggest lead of the night at 58-46 with 4:51 to play.
UTD cut it to four on one occasion but the Cowboys held on by hitting 9-of-10 free throws down the stretch. HSU held the Comets to 35.8 percent shooting for the night and only had nine turnovers.
Justin Jones led the Cowboys with 23 points and 10 rebounds, for his seventh double-double of the season.
Duane Hopper had 13 points and
Christian O'Neal had 10 points and six assists.
Caleb Banks had 19 points and seven assists for UTD and Jon Hatcher added 11 points.
HSU is now 9-4 overall and 4-1 in ASC play. UTD fell to 7-3 overall and 2-2 in league play. The Cowboys will close ASC cross divisional play with a 3 p.m. game against Ozarks on Saturday.
