Cowgirls Split with Centenary on Saturday

ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' softball team split a doubleheader with the Centenary Ladies on Saturday at Ellis Field to wrap up the team's spring break tournament.

The Cowgirls claimed game one 6-3 over Centenary. Mason McCord drove in two in the third and Sarah Diesnner knocked home McCord for a 3-0 lead early. The Cowgirls got three more in the sixth inning after a McCord three-run homer to go up 6-0.

The Ladies of Centenary began to rally in the final inning with three straight hits, but the Cowgirls held them off to win 6-3.

Aubrianna Salazar was the winning pitcher for the Cowgirls with four strikeouts and only three runs allowed in six plus innings. Christina Blevins came in and got the save for HSU.

The Ladies started Cambry Bates who ended with the loss. Kirstyn Gomez finished for the Ladies and had two strikeouts in four innings.

Kaylen Washington led the Cowgirls with three hits including a double while McCord had five RBIs and the home run. Brittanie Henry took two walks and stole a pair of bases in the leadoff spot.

Game two was a pitchers' duel until the fifth inning when the Cowgirls got a man on and over, managing to score off an error and take a 1-0 lead.

The Centenary Ladies got a couple on base in the sixth before Bates lined one out of the park in left to score three on the home run, taking a 3-1 lead. Ashley Hunter came in to get the save in the final innings for Centenary, winning by a final of 3-1.

Washington started at pitcher for Hardin-Simmons. She had two strikeouts and only gave up five hits in five innings of work. Haven Williams came in and recorded the loss and had three strikeouts.

Hailee Leger started for Centenary and she had four strikeouts in five innings without an earned run. Hunter had a pair of Ks in the save.

Bates had the big play of game two on the home run for Centenary, and the Cowgirls totaled five hits in the second game.

The Cowgirls move to a record of 3-8 and will be back at Lou Morton Ellis Field to host Schreiner for a doubleheader next Tuesday starting at 4 p.m.
