Cowgirls Split Tuesday Games with Schreiner

ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' softball team split a doubleheader with the Schreiner Mountaineers on Tuesday night at Ellis Field.

The Cowgirls claimed game one 8-3. Brookelyn Casper had a great day pitching for the Cowgirls with eight strikeouts. Casper started and went the distance to pitch around eight hits, getting the win.

Peyton Newman doubled home Sarah Diessner in the first inning, but the Mountaineers would tie t at 1-1 in the third. Kate Tovar got the Cowgirls the lead back with an RBI double in the third.

Diessner dropped a Cowgirl solo shot out of left to make it 3-1 and Casper helped her own cause with an RBI to make it a 4-1 HSU lead in the fifth inning. Karis Hessert tripled home three runs in the sixth and Tovar drove in another to make it 8-1.

Schreiner got a two-run home run from Bri Wodke in the seventh but couldn't make the comeback and fell 8-3 to the Cowgirls.

The Cowgirls totaled 12 hits in game one and Tovar had two with a pair of RBIs while Hessert led with two hits and three RBIs.

Wodke took the loss pitching for Schreiner but had an impressive hitting day with a double and the home run. Marley Hilton came in to finish the game for Schreiner.

Game two was a pitchers' duel for the first four innings before the Mountaineers broke through for two runs in the fifth to lead 2-0.

The Cowgirls scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-1 and Schreiner got out of the sixth inning on an incredible diving stop by the second baseman Annie Wallace keep the lead.

Carrie Fulton crushed the ball and the Cowgirl momentum with a grand slam for Schreiner in the seventh making it a 7-1 Mountaineer lead with one run from earlier in the inning.

The Cowgirls got some runner on and scored two in the last stand but couldn't make up the deficit and fell 7-3 to Schreiner in game two.

Kaylen Washington started at pitcher for HSU and only allowed two runs in five innings with the loss. Christina Blevins finished the game for the Cowgirls.

Kaylee Culpepper threw game two for Schreiner and had a nice night with only one earned run allowed and five hits given up in the win.

Diessner led the Cowgirls with two hits and two driven in for game two. Marley Carrizales had four hits to lead Schreiner and Fulton with four RBIs on the grand slam.

The Cowgirls move to 4-9 on the season. The HSU softball team will get back to American Southwest Conference play starting this Friday with a doubleheader against the East Texas Baptist Tigers in Marshall starting at 4 p.m.
