Box Score 2 ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' softball team split an American Southwest Conference doubleheader with the Sul Ross State Lobos on Friday night at Ellis Field.
The Cowgirl softball team smashed out ten doubles in the first game of the series, breaking the team record for doubles in a game that was previously eight. Peyton Newman had three doubles in game one.
In game one, the Lobos got off to a hot start with four runs in the first inning. The Cowgirls had to work their way back and started with one run in the second inning from an Aubrianna Salazar RBI double to make it 4-1 Lobos.
Newman hit her first double of the night in the third to score, and Kaylen Washington followed to double in Newman making it 4-3 Sul Ross after three.
Sarah Polanco got a double in the fourth to drive in the tying run for the Cowgirls, and Polanco scored on a throwing error to take the lead 5-4 in the fourth.
The Cowgirls poured it on in the fourth with Mason McCord doubling to score a run and Karis Hessert driving in another. Newman drove in the last Cowgirl run of the fourth with her second RBI double of the night.
The Cowgirls led 8-4 after four, and Brittanie Henry drove in two more with another double in the fifth to make it 10-4 Hardin-Simmons.
Stop me if you've heard this one before, but Newman hit her third RBI double of the game in the sixth inning. Sarah Diessner wrapped up game one with an RBI to make it 12-4 Cowgirls.
Kaylen Washington started for the Cowgirls and Kelly Shackelford came in to get the win with the late run support. Shackelford only allowed three hits in five innings of work.
Newman led the Cowgirls with three doubles and three RBIs. McCord had two RBIs with a triple and a double. Polanco and Salazar had three hits each, both with a double and Salazar adding a triple.
Sul Ross would get the last laugh on Friday night, winning game two by a final score of 6-2. Miranda Martinez threw a complete game to get the win for the Lobos and Annika Canaba had two RBIs with a double and a triple.
McCord doubled to bring the lead down to 3-1 for Sul Ross in the third, but the fourth inning saw the Lobos extend the lead. Sul Ross got some help from mother nature and scored three runs with two outs on a pair of pop flies that were lost to the wind, landing in no mans land after the Cowgirls gave chase.
The Lobos carried the 6-1 lead until Kate Tovar singled home a run for Hardin-Simmons in the fifth, making it 6-2. The Cowgirls had 12 hits in game two but ended the fifth and sixth innings with the bases loaded and had two on in the seventh but were unable to score.
Salazar had the loss pitching for HSU in game two. Haven Williams only allowed three hits in three innings of relief for the Cowgirls as well.
Peyton Newman had three more singles in game two, making it a 6-8 night at the plate for both games. McCord and Tovar each had an RBI for the Cowgirls.
The Cowgirls move to a record of 10-16 and 6-8 in ASC play. The Lobos are now 10-8 and 10-6 in the conference. The teams will finish the series tomorrow starting at 12 noon at Ellis Field on Grape Street in Abilene.
