Box Score 2 ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl softball team won both games of a doubleheader against the McMurry War Hawks on Sunday afternoon played at the ACU Poly Wells Field.
The Cowgirls took game one by a final of 12-8. Brookelyn Casper started in the circle for the Cowgirls and threw five innings only allowing three runs on five hits. Casper also had three strikeouts on the evening. Kelly Shackelford came in to finish the game for the Cowgirls.
Karis Hessert drove in Brittanie Henry to start the game in the first inning, taking a 1-0 Cowgirl lead. Henry hit and RBI single in the second followed with a Kate Tovar double to score the third HSU run.
Sarah Polanco came home after a Henry steal led to a throwing error and Mason McCord drove in another in the fourth. Hessert wrapped up the fourth inning with a two-run homerun making it 7-0 Cowgirls.
McMurry put together three runs in the fifth, but the Cowgirls got those three back with RBIs from Tovar, Hessert, and Peyton Newman in the sixth inning to lead 10-3.
The Cowgirls would plate two more runs on a bad throw and the War Hawk comeback did not make the mark, leaving the Hardin-Simmons with a 12-8 win in game one.
Henry, Tovar, and Hessert all had three hits in game one, Hessert adding four RBIs with a homerun and a double. Henry also had two stolen bags in the first game.
The Cowgirls won game two 4-1 behind a dominant pitching day from Kaylen Washington. She started and threw a four-hit, one-run game with nine strikeouts in the complete game win.
Sarah Diessner led off the Cowgirl scoring with an RBI-single up the middle in the second inning to lead 1-0. Tovar drove in another in the third and Hessert doubled to score her, making it 3-0 in the third.
McMurry scored in the fifth and Hessert answered with a crushing solo homerun over the ACU scoreboard in left to get the 4-1 lead that the Cowgirls would hold for the win.
Hessert and Newman each had three hits in game two, each with a double and Hessert with the homerun.
The Cowgirls improve to 15-19 and 11-11 in ASC play while McMurry falls to 18-13 and 14-12 in the conference. Given how the ASC standings shook out, the Cowgirls will travel to Belhaven for the ASC Tournament to face the same McMurry War Hawks in game one starting at 10 a.m. Thursday in Jackson.
